Morag Myerscough mural painted for The Festival of Making

I was so happy to be commissioned to draw and paint a wonderful Artwork created by Morag Myserscough, on the Prism Contemporary Gallery building in Blackburn for the Festival of Making.

Morags design was in collaboration with Crown Paints and she wanted to create an urban garden within the city centre for the festival. It was my job to scale the Artwork, replicate the grid and drawing on the 4 walls huge walls, then paint it all in time for the festival with my 2 wonderful assistants.

The walls totalled 150m2 and we battled every type of weather but after 17 days super hard work the mural was ready!

Below is some picture from our journey showing the process from the gridding of the image and the marking up f the wall, to painting on the render to perfecting the lines of the design.

I was so happy to be back up a scissor lift and to be working with my dear friend Siobhan Hogan again!

The design was very complex and I had to grid the wall every 10cm but still had to draw to the cm!!! There were also around 50 paint colours to keep track of so I used a paint by numbers technique because a lot of the shades were super close. It got confusing sometimes but it worked!

First things first there was a lot of planning my end, scaling, colour coding and creating certain stencils to make the marking up of some shapes more efficient. Then on the 18th of June I started making the wall!

When we were on our last leg of the mural Morag arrived and was thrilled with our progress so that made us all really happy!

This was my first time bringing someone else’s Artwork to life and I honestly loved every minute of it. Even getting stuck up the scissor lift 3 times and the rain attacking us out of no where!

The Festival of Making was truly wonderful so find out more about that here
